Welcome to WALK HACKNEY. My name is Sean Gubbins. I hope you will choose to come on my walks, when I can share with you my passion for Hackney’s history.
Having made my career in IT (after studying American History at Warwick University), it was my interest in history since childhood which led me to train as a secondary school history teacher and teach in inner -London schools for 8 years.
More recently, I developed an interest in local history. Training as a Clerkenwell and Islington Guide motivated me to devise and deliver walks in Hackney, where I have been leading history walks since 2002.
I have lived for over 20 years in Hackney, where I have brought up my children. I am a member of the Hackney Society and Friends of Hackney Archives. I volunteer to open up Hackney’s St. Augustine’s Tower and I contributed an article on local history to “EASTeight”, a monthly neighbourhood magazine.
Having left teaching in September 2013, I have studied for an MA in Historical Research at the University of London, to develop my research skills so that I can find out more about Hackney’s past to share with you.
Sean’s truly impressive knowledge and enthusiasm for the Hackney area made for a brilliant morning of sightseeing.
